Questions

The theme for this year’s School Magazine is Questions. Each year group will put a page in the Magazine and share interesting questions. The questions may reveal a little bit of the personality of the askers. But to get to hard questions we should build up to it.

The following provides a possible pathway to generate interesting questions. In the end we will have pages for our School Magazine and our students may have picked up some useful thinking processes along the way.

Learning Intention:

Ask a good question

Success:

Use words like Who, What, Where, Why, When, How

Ask questions about something you are interested in.

Ask questions that will be hard to answer

Start with the clip - Who What When Where How.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lEErH_rNBQ

You should ask some questions now. Talk to each other.

Junior - A new question: Sing the song What do you think my name is? I wonder if you know?

You can also review with Good Charlotte - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrrMEex1_lg

We ask questions with some important words:

Who

What

When

Where

How

Why

Go to writing books…

Write a sentence for each of these questions. Some kids find it handy to start with a context ie “Use these questions to ask about school (the weekend, the holidays, the football, the weather) Share them and the answers at the end of the short writing session. They were probably basic questions needing basic answers.

Junior - Here is a famous song with lots of questions – Blowin’ in the Wind

Watch this clip about asking questions… What Questions Did You Ask Today?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6ZnJIdgc1A

Ask the kids to think about something they are really interested in. Put a few headings down the page…

Environment

Technology

Sport

Animals

Vehicles

Leisure

Now watch the clip – How Many Questions to Kids Ask a Day?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1nOPBEGIi8

Wow! Kids ask a lot of questions. And kids ask questions that are hard to answer.

Go back to writing books and encourage kids to ask some questions that are hard to answer…

Environment

How big can cities become?

Will we always use electricity?

Who decides which creatures are endangered?

Technology

Who invented electricity?

Will people always use mobile phones?

Sport

Why do people play sport?

What games did ancient people play?

What games will we play in the future?

Animals

How many cows are there?

Why do people farm some animals and not others?

Vehicles

How can we make more efficient vehicles?

How can vehicles help humanity?

Leisure

How much leisure time do people need?

What is leisure?

What do people do for fun?

At this point you can present your questions in many different formats. To get everyone’s face and name on the page the Grade 2/3 classes are creating an A4 poster with their question and artwork relating to it.

Click to get A4 proformas:

1, 2, 3, 4,

Each child is photographed with their poster then Auto-collage (Loaded on our computers) is used to collage all the photographs to fit on an A4 page. Feel free to simply place the child’s photo and type their question nearby if you don’t have the class time to create the art to go with it.

When you finish you can save your page to _AAA Magazine 2017 on the Staff Common Drive as shown below...
